drivability studies and calculations

The leading method for drivability studies in the USA is a GRL-WEAP study.  We are happy to help you conduct a GRL-WEAP study of your hammer, pile, and soil conditions.  However, not every situation requires an expensive GRL-WEAP study, we hope the below calculations help.

calculate weight of steel pile (imperial)

Step 1 - First Know the following pile dimensions

Outside Diameter of Pile (in inches) = OD

Thickness of the pile (in inches) = Wall Thickness

Step 2 - Calculate weight per foot

Here's the full calculation:    Wt/Ft = 10.69 X (OD - Wall Thickness) X Wall Thickness.

Now just plug in your numbers for OD and Wall Thickness


Example: 24" diameter pile that's 1" thick. (OD = 24, Wall Thickness = 1)

10.69 X (24 - 1) X  1 = lbs per foot

(I) 24 -1 = 23

(II) 23 X 10.69 = 245.87

(III) 245.87 x 1 = 245.87 lbs per foot

Step 3 - Calculate length

Now that you know your pile is 245.87 lbs per foot, just calculate the number of feet in length that your pile is.


Example: 20 foot long pile

245.87 X 20 =  4,917.4 lbs total.
